Privacy fence installation in Waco, TX

A real privacy fence does three jobs at once: it blocks sightlines from the neighbors, keeps pets and kids in the yard, and finishes the back of the house. We'll match you with a Waco-area fencing pro who builds privacy fences day in and day out.

Heights & styles

How tall should a privacy fence be in Waco?

Inside Waco city limits, residential rear-yard fences are generally allowed up to 8 ft (with permits handled correctly), and front-yard portions are usually capped lower for visibility. Most homeowners pick:

  • 6 ft cedar privacy — the default. Blocks line-of-sight for most adults; pairs cleanly with most HOA rules.
  • 8 ft cedar privacy — when you back up to a two-story neighbor, an alley, a busy road, or a commercial parking lot.
  • Shadowbox / board-on-board — pickets alternate sides of the rail. Looks finished from both sides; required by some HOAs on street-facing sections.

Your installer will confirm what your address actually allows. If you've got HOA rules, share them in the form notes.

Privacy fence checklist for pets & kids

  • Bottom rail or kickboard so dogs can't dig under
  • Self-closing, self-latching gate hardware
  • No horizontal stringers on the inside (climbing risk for kids)
  • Pickets sized so small dogs can't slip between
  • Pool side? Latches at least 54 inches up, code-compliant

Property lines & HOA

Property lines, HOA approval, and the neighbor conversation

Two of the three things that slow a privacy fence project down are property-line questions and HOA approval — both of which are easier if you handle them before booking install.

  • Find the survey. Most Waco-area homes have a survey from the closing folder showing where the property line actually runs. Don't trust the old fence line by default.
  • Talk to the neighbor first. If a section sits on a shared line, a quick conversation prevents a much longer, much worse one later.
  • Submit your HOA app early. In Hewitt and Woodway especially, HOAs may want a sketch, materials, and height. Approval can take 2–4 weeks.
  • Pull the city permit. Inside Waco city limits, a residential fence permit is typically required. Your installer handles this on most builds.

What we hear most often

"The neighbor's fence is technically on our property."

Common, and usually solvable. Options range from leaving it (and building yours offset slightly) to splitting cost on a shared replacement. The on-site pro can talk you through what's normal in Central Texas.

"The HOA only allows certain pickets."

Also normal — usually cedar, board-on-board, or a specific stain. We'll match you with a pro who has built that style before.

Materials

Privacy fence material options

Cedar

The most common privacy material in Waco. Naturally rot-resistant, ages silver, looks right with most homes.

Treated Pine

Cheaper up front, common in pre-built panels. Plan on staining to keep it from warping in the sun.

Vinyl

Won't rot, peel, or need staining. Higher up-front cost, very low maintenance.
