What you can build

Wood fence styles homeowners ask for in Waco

Most wood fence projects in McLennan County land in one of four shapes. The right pick depends on whether you're prioritizing privacy, curb appeal, or budget.

  • 6 ft cedar privacy. The default for backyards in Hewitt, Woodway, China Spring. Pickets butt-jointed or with a small gap. Best balance of privacy, price, and lifespan.
  • 8 ft cedar privacy. Where allowed by HOA and city, an 8 ft fence buys real privacy from two-story neighbors. Often paired with a top trim board.
  • Shadowbox / board-on-board. Pickets alternate on either side of the rail so the fence looks finished from both sides. Slightly more lumber, often required by HOA street-facing sections.
  • Cap & trim ("Western Red Cedar topped"). A horizontal cap board and decorative top rail for a more finished, custom look. Adds curb appeal at a modest upcharge.
  • Treated pine pre-built panels. The budget-friendly option you'll see in builder neighborhoods. Cheaper up front but typically a shorter usable life than cedar in our climate.

Quick wood vs. wood comparison

  • Cedar: naturally rot- and bug-resistant, ages to silver-gray. Most popular for full-replacement projects.
  • Treated pine: lower up-front cost, common in pre-built panels. Prone to warping in the Texas sun if not stained.
  • Hybrid: cedar pickets on treated pine 4×4 posts is a common, sensible build.

Tip: Posts fail before pickets. A cedar fence on undersized or shallow-set posts won't outlast a pine fence on solid 8 ft posts.

Central Texas reality

Why wood fences fail early in Central Texas (and how to avoid it)

Most "the fence is only 6 years old and it's already leaning" calls trace back to a few install shortcuts. None of them are exotic — they're just things that get cut on the cheapest builder package.

  • Shallow post holes. Posts need to be set deep enough to get below seasonal soil movement. In our clay soils, that's 24–36 inches at minimum.
  • Wet pickets nailed to dry rails. Green lumber shrinks. Gaps you didn't pay for show up six months later.
  • Pickets touching dirt. The bottom 1–2 inches of a picket should be off the ground or sit on a kickboard so it isn't constantly wicking moisture.
  • Galvanized vs. plain steel hardware. Cheap nails and screws rust within a couple of seasons and bleed stains down the boards.

Repair or replace?

If your cedar fence is leaning but the pickets are still mostly straight, you may not need to replace everything.

  • Posts solid, pickets warped → replace pickets and rails, keep posts.
  • Posts loose at base, pickets sound → replace posts and reuse pickets where possible.
  • Posts and pickets both gone → full replacement is usually the cheapest long-term move.

Process

How a wood fence install usually goes

Walk the line

The pro confirms property lines, gate locations, slope, and which side gets the "good" face.

Demo old fence

Existing pickets, rails, and posts come out. Concrete footings are removed where possible.

Set posts

4×4 cedar or treated posts go in concrete. Most installers let posts cure before hanging rails.

Pickets & gates

Rails, pickets, kickboards, gates, and any cap/trim. Cleanup and a final walkthrough wrap the job.
